Match Results For the Year
- Get it here.
And Finally...
- Those of us at our quickplay event back in June may remember Mark Ruston's
flag falling as he delivered mate. He was awarded the game, but I enquired on
rec.games.chess.misc
whether this was right. On the whole, it seems, we were: but this was by far and
away the best reply
Summer Team Quickplay
- Beckenham's A-Team (Snape, Smith, Ruston, Sands) beats Charlton, crushes
Sidcup but lose to Lewisham. Selection shocker as they lose narrowly to
Beckenham's B team (Alfred, Rastall, Brougham, Unudurti)!

Rose Bowl
I always enjoy the Rose Bowl quickplay, and wonder whether we should do it twice
a year (at Christmas?). But the ritual humiliation on the very last week of the
season signifies a year well played and a two-month break till the season begins
once again. Enough of this waffle! No matter how large the grading handicap,
the strongest players out in the end, despite the odd time-loss along the way.
This year's winner was Ian Snape, who squeezed in ahead of Mark Ruston by
a half-point. Other highlights were Malcolm Mourant, two Queens and a pawn ahead,
stalemating Fred Wellings in the middle of the board. And a tough fought game
between Mark Ruston and Alan Sands ending in Mark delivering mate - but his flag
fell in the delivery! A bit of bluster, and we decided that mate ends all, no
need to press the clock. But is this true? Does anyone know?
Club Championship
The Club Championship finished last week and was won by Dave Smith.
Malcolm will no doubt fill us in on the details.

Kent Finals Day
- Not since 1958 have Beckenham won the Lewis Cup; but on 18th May 2003,
Mark Ruston's team beat Lewisham 4-2 in the Finals at Sevenoaks to win the Lewis
Cup for Beckenham. This was the fourth succcessive year Mark has reached the
Finals challenging for this prize. Wins from Jay Rastall & Chris Bernard,
supported by draws from Ian Snape, Dave Smith, Andy Heard and Mark
himself secured victory. The team would like to thank all the fellow club members
who turned up on the day to give their support.
Kent Semi Finals
- Mark Ruston's Lewis Cup team are through to Finals Day after beating
Tunbridge Wells; but it was tight! With the score at 2-3, Mark played a captain's
innings on Board Three to win in the last few minutes and seal the victory on
Board Count.
- But our Harvey & Tom Fuller teams both go out on Board Count,
whilst our En Passant side are deafeated 2-4 after long trip to Hastings.
Commiserations due to captain's Chris Bernard, Conor Cormican, Malcolm Mourant
and their teams.
London League Season Outcome
- Beckenham beat Streatham
in first division, but both South London teams end up in the drop zone.
- Meanwhile, our Second Team lose to Dulwich Plough, but finish mid-table ('ish).
