Welcome to our club's website archive for 2006 - 07.
July 2007Thanks to Malcolm's diligence, the final results for 2007 season are now available.
Malcolm Mourant reports.....We had a good turn out for the annual needle match last Thursday. This time Beckenham managed to win (for the first time).

Neil Cannon wins the Verney cup for the second year running. More detail at the AGM in September...
Kent Finals Day just played out at the Mick Jagger Centre proved a dissapointment for Beckenham players. The Lewis Cup team were heavily outgraded by Rainham (30 points a board on average) but drew a tight match 3-3, with only Andy Heard failing. John Alderson equalised for Beckenham. Alan Sands, John Griffiths, Malcolm Mourant and Andrew Sangster all secured draws against strong opponents. Sadly, the tie-break ruled against us (doesn't it always!?) to make Rainham the winners.
Ian Snape's County Cup team had a day to forget (5½ - ½) against Maidenhead, and Howard's Intro Team were unlucky to find themselves a default and half-point down on four boards before the match even started! The reason was that the players had been regraded in the interim to increase their estimated grade beyond the 60 limit. The match (probably) fininshed 2½ - 2
May 2007
It is now the time of year when Beckenham & Bromley Chess Club puts on a few events of its own, to finish the season with. Please make a note in your diaries of the following:
30 moves in 1 hour, 15 min quick play finish.
This is a popular event where competition and fun combine. We try to divide the club into 2 teams of roughly equal strength based on geography. It means that the boundaries are sometimes stretched a little, but a good evening is the aim of the match. Incidentally, we have been running this event for 3 years now and Bromley have won every time. Being a Bromley man myself, this is just as it should be.
It is not possible to make up the teams on the night, so I would be very pleased to hear from all of you as to whether you can or cannot play as soon as possible and in any event by Sunday 2nd June.

Now on Interweb at http://www.croydonchessleague.org.uk/.
Webmaster Richard Tillett points out...
It is fairly basic at this stage but does have the fixtures, results and current league tables. I hope to add some additional pages, eg news and maybe something about the history of the League (and perhaps some pictures and graphics too).
Please note that I have included email addresses for captains and in some cases telephone numbers if anyone wants their contact details removed for privacy reasons, or to evade the attentions of the spammers, please let me know.
I would also be glad of feedback if anyone has problems with the pages. Although I have tested it in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Netscape there may still be problems with other browsers (I haven’t checked it on a Mac, for instance).
All comments/suggestions/corrections welcome.
A few of us entered the above congress and we did rather well:
Ian Snape won the Open with 4 ½ from 5
I managed to win the Intermediate, sharing top place with a Mr A Waldock from Ashtead both with 4 out of 5 (he beat me in round 2 but was the top graded player in the section but drew his last 2 games). Malcolm was 3rd with 31/2 from 5 they gave him the grading prize it was more money. Andrew Sangster also played but withdrew after some bad luck against some juniors one of whom has joined the club.
Nobody from the club entered the major but Alan Fraser did well in the minor ending with 3 from 5 he also lost to one of our juniors in an early round. A number of our junior members played but I do not know their names.
What really put the iceing on the cake however was a club team event with the top 3 highest counting with Ian, Malcolm, and myself scoring rather well we won it by 1/2 a point and the prize was 100 pounds. Malcolm collected the cheque to give to Andrew if it had been top 4 places I think we would still have won counting Alan's 3 pionts. Coulsdon were second.
The congress was organised by the Kent Junior chess association (KJCA) so I suppose that sort of makes us Kent champions!
For the first time for many years, we have qualified for the final of the County Cup - by the skin of our teeth. We will play Maidstone in the final.
We regularly do well in the Lewis Cup and this year is no exception. We topped the Metropolitan section of the league and will now play Rainham 1 in the semi-finals. Congratulations to Ian Snape who captains both the County and Lewis teams.
Our third team played in the En Passant league and just missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals. It all depended on whether Dartford beat Sidcup in the final match of the season. Unfortunately, they did.
Our fourth team, in the Harvey Cup was even more unlucky, missing out by just half a game point.
Our fifth team entered into the Intro Cup this year for the first time for a number of years and, despite some difficulties in finding the right players for this league, managed to finish first. They are through to the finals because they got a bye in the semi-final round. Well done to their captain, Howard Walden.
Our two London League teams are not faring so well. They each have one more match to play. Our first team will do well to avoid relegation to the 3rd division and our fourth team is certain to be relegated to the 4th division. Because of the difficulty of finding enough players to field two teams effectively, it is likely that we will field only one team next year.
Finally, our three juniors, Robert Maguire, Baven Balendran and Justin Brown, took on Charlton Juniors in a recent rapidly match and came out winners 5:1. An excellent result.

The English Chess Federation is supporting a petition at Number 10 Petitions calling for chess to be considered a sport. I know that I support this, because I for one find chess a whole load more exhausting than playing cricket!
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Require all Government Departments to give Mind Sports such as Chess and Go equivalent status with physical sports.

I wrote up one of my Dorset Championship games the other day, and invited my opponent to contribute a few notes, which he did. Apparently it's going to be published in the Bournemouth Evening Echo on the basis of an interesting Zugzwang:

...which my opponent just failed to notice in time! You can get the whole game online here.
David has also discovered this fascinating piece of history - the voice of Alexander Alekhine. The interview seems to have been recorded by the BBC in 1938.

Justin writes to point out the Brixton & Streatham Chess club website
With the holiday season upon us, club members’ thoughts may be turning to what chess books to study, or to ask for as presents. But there are so many chess books to choose from! Here are some of my favourites, which I have selected mainly with the requirements of players graded around BCF 100-150 in mind.
Thanks to Neil Cannon for noticing that Mark Ruston, of this parish, won the Major Section of the British Rapidplay championships in November.
Winner of the Open, Danny Gormally, has also been a sometime player for Beckenham too. It's quite surprising just how often this seems to happen cf. Jersey 2003 (do they still play that event?).

We didn't manage to get a picture of Ian Snape collecting the Lewis Cup last May, but here's something almost as good.
.
The cup is the Participation Trophy for the most points scored in last year's internal club championship [won by John, not Fred!].
Thanks to Malcolm Mourant for the picture
